We’ve verified 13 independent vegetarian restaurants in New York City, and 11 of them serve no animal products at all. That’s the short version. The longer version: the city’s plant-based food clusters hard in the East Village, then thins out fast once you cross a bridge.

We list a place only after we confirm it’s open and read how its kitchen treats vegetarians and vegans. Each one gets a friendliness tier. This page covers the independents, grouped by where you’ll be eating. Our editors last checked most of these profiles in June 2026, so confirm hours before you commute.
Vegetarian restaurants in New York City by tier
Eleven are 100% vegan. One is 100% vegetarian. One is vegetarian-friendly. We have none yet in the “marks vegetarian items” or “less vegetarian-friendly” tiers. That gap says more about our coverage than about New York. Plenty of meat-serving restaurants here label their vegetarian dishes, and we haven’t verified them yet.
So for now, this page works best when you want a kitchen where you never have to ask. Gino’s of Great Neck is the one exception, and we flag it below.

East Village: four of the 13 within a few blocks
The East Village is the densest pocket. Ravi DeRossi founded Avant Garden and runs Soda Club through his Overthrow Hospitality group. The other two have long followings of their own.
- Superiority Burger (119 Avenue A) is our one 100% vegetarian pick. Chef Brooks Headley uses dairy and eggs in some dishes, and he marks the vegan ones clearly. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand. You can book a few tables on Resy, but the counter and back bar take walk-ins only.
- Avant Garden (95 Avenue A, second floor) is the date-night option. The vegan menu leans on vegetables, mushrooms, grains, and house-made pasta instead of mock meat. Book on Resy, where tables open 21 days out. Expect $$$.
- Soda Club (95 Avenue A) cooks all-vegan Italian: handmade pasta, Roman-style pinsa, and cannoli. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand too. You can eat until midnight Monday to Thursday and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
- Caravan of Dreams (405 E 6th St) has served vegan, organic, kosher-certified food since 1991, which makes it the elder statesman here. Reviewers bring up the Caravan Burrito more than anything else.
Avant Garden and Soda Club share the 95 Avenue A address, so one trip covers either.
Midtown South, Kips Bay, SoHo, and Chinatown
South of 34th Street, the options spread out, but you can string them into one day.
- Franchia (12 Park Ave, Murray Hill) opened in 2003 as the casual sister to Hangawi. It’s a Korean tea house at heart, with Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Malaysian dishes layered in. Expect $$$.
- Candle (388 3rd Ave, Kips Bay) carries on the old Candle Cafe family. The original Candle Cafe, Candle 79, and Candle Cafe West all closed by December 2020. The same culinary team reopened as a single 52-seat Candle in 2023. If you remember the old names, update your bookmarks.
- Jerrell’s BETR BRGR (117 6th Ave, SoHo) is the late-night answer. Burgers come with Impossible patties and vegan cheese, and shakes come with Oatly. You can order until 3:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
- Bodhi Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant (77 Mulberry St, Chinatown) went fully vegan in July 2023 and keeps its kosher certification. The menu runs from dim sum to noodles to vegan sushi. Doors open daily at 11 a.m.
Brooklyn: two vegan Caribbean kitchens
Our Brooklyn picks share a theme. Both kitchens take Caribbean cooking, which usually leans on meat, and make it fully plant-based.
- Next Stop Vegan (88 Livingston St, Downtown Brooklyn) serves Dominican and Caribbean food. In early 2026 the team rebranded it as NSV Creative Caribbean Kitchen, so you may see either name. The kitchen takes Mondays off. Book ahead.
- Moss Vegan Bistro (943 Carroll St, Crown Heights) is a takeout spot with jackfruit roti, BBQ jerk jackfruit, and a chkn burger that reviewers rave about. It’s closed Thursdays.
Queens and Long Island: smaller, further out
- CoCo Lin Vegetarian House (64-19 Fresh Pond Rd, Ridgewood) has cooked vegan Chinese-American food since 2010. Think General Tso’s and Peking duck, made from seitan, tofu, and mushrooms. Ask about the bubble tea before you order, because one reviewer flagged possible dairy in it. CoCo Lin closes Mondays.
- Amitabha Vegan Restaurant (68-24 Fresh Meadow Ln, Fresh Meadows) opened in 2019. Its cooks skip onions, garlic, and scallions in keeping with Buddhist dietary practice. Amitabha closes Wednesdays.
- Gino’s of Great Neck (60 Middle Neck Rd, Great Neck) is the lone vegetarian-friendly pick, and it’s in Nassau County. This pizzeria makes named vegetable pies, including broccoli rabe, eggplant and ricotta, and broccoli, spinach, and cheese. Nothing on the menu carries a vegetarian label, so order those pies by name rather than stripping meat off a standard one. Meat shares the kitchen, and we rate cross-contamination a 1 out of 5.
What to know before you go
- Check the day. Moss Vegan Bistro, CoCo Lin, Next Stop Vegan, and Amitabha each close one day a week, and it’s a different day at each. Hours change, so confirm on the profile page or on sites like Superiority Burger and Caravan of Dreams before you commute.
- Book the East Village on weekends. Avant Garden, Soda Club, and Caravan of Dreams all take reservations.
- Kosher and vegan overlap. Bodhi, Candle, and Caravan of Dreams hold kosher certification, which adds a second layer of ingredient checking.
- “Vegetarian” doesn’t mean vegan at Superiority Burger. Use the vegan marks on the menu if you avoid dairy and eggs.

Gaps in our New York map
We haven’t verified anyone yet in the Bronx, Staten Island, or New Jersey, and we have just one place in Nassau County. The directory also includes chains such as Le Botaniste, Luanne’s Wild Ginger, Vegan Grill, Peacefood Cafe, and Slutty Vegan. We keep them off the count above because this page counts independents. We’ll update it as we verify more.
