Veggie Galaxy: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
This Central Square diner runs the whole menu vegetarian. No meat or fish anywhere. Booths, a counter, breakfast served all day. You don’t hunt for the vegetarian option here. It’s the only option, and the kitchen will make most of the menu vegan on request without blinking.
Order the double beet lentil burger. It comes stacked with lettuce, tomato, red onion, cheddar, and a house galaxy sauce, and it holds together like a burger should, not like a veggie patty falling apart on the bun. In the morning, and here it’s always morning if you want it to be, get the pancakes or the mac and stack. That plate runs tempeh bacon and hash browns in place of the usual diner meat sides. Over-easy eggs and cheddar on a griddled bun cover anyone still eating dairy and egg. Save room for dessert. An on-site bakery turns out its own pastries, and the case by the register is not an afterthought.
Because the whole restaurant is vegetarian, cross-contamination with meat isn’t a question you need to ask. Order a dish vegan and the kitchen swaps in plant-based butter, cheese, or egg replacer as a matter of course, not as a special favor. That’s the gap between a restaurant with a vegan section bolted on and one built vegetarian from the ground up.
Adam Penn opened the place on September 5, 2011, after running Veggie Planet in Harvard Square for over a decade. Pedigree shows. In 2026, VegNews named it Best Vegan-Friendly Restaurant in America, and the diner has kept its regulars through more than a decade of Central Square turning over around it.
Expect diner prices with a modern kink, moderate rather than cheap. Two people eating a full meal, appetizer included, land around $60 before tip. That buys a burger platter, a stack of pancakes, and a shared dessert, not fast food. It fits a lazy Sunday brunch, a solo lunch at the counter, or a mixed table where half the group eats dairy and half wants it gone entirely. Small parties can’t book ahead. Weekend mornings mean a wait, especially during Central Square’s brunch rush when the line runs out the door.
Gluten-free eaters have real options too. Staff field enough requests for dairy-free and gluten-free swaps that they won’t need the terms explained. Still, ask about specific allergens before you order if yours is severe.
There’s outdoor seating when the weather allows it, cash and cards both work, and takeout is available at the counter, though the diner doesn’t run its own delivery. If you want it brought to you, a third-party app is the way. Air conditioning runs through summer, a small thing that matters when the brunch line stretches out the door and onto Massachusetts Avenue.
A restaurant that stays entirely vegetarian, no meat option waiting in the wings, and still fills a diner on a Tuesday morning, is proof the food carries the place, not the ideology. Central Square has churned through plenty of restaurants since 2011. This one is still there, still packing the counter, still making the case one burger at a time.
