Veggie Crust: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
Veggie Crust is a 100% vegetarian pizzeria in Somerville. No meat touches this kitchen. Ever. Order the paneer Manchurian pizza or a scoop of vegan nice cream and you’re eating from a menu where every item, cheese included, skips animal flesh entirely.
It opened on Somerville Avenue in 2016 and built a following on Indian-inspired pizza nobody else in the Boston area makes. Start with the curry leaf pesto portobella pie, a green pesto base loaded with roasted mushroom and curry leaf that tastes more like a Chennai kitchen than an Italian one. The paneer tikka barbecue pizza runs the same trick with tandoori-spiced paneer cubes and a tangy barbecue drizzle. Building your own works too. Pick a regular or whole wheat crust, stack from a long vegetable list, then choose dairy mozzarella or the house vegan cheese. Both are made in-house, sauce included.
Pasta, salads, and paninis round out the rest of the menu, plus a fresh juice list and a soft-serve “nice cream” bar for dessert. Vegans get full menu access here, not one token dish. That vegan cheese melts and stretches like standard mozzarella, and several pizzas run dairy-free by default with no substitution needed.
Kosher certification under KVH supervision covers every dish: Pas Yisrael, Chalav Yisrael, Bishul Yisrael. Stack that on top of a fully vegetarian menu and there’s no meat prep line to cross with, no shared fryer, no grill doing double duty on burgers. Anyone keeping a strict vegetarian or kosher diet orders anything on the board without the usual round of questions to the server.
Pizzas run $12 to $20, less for a panini or salad, more with a side and a juice tacked on. That’s casual pizzeria pricing. Reservations are worth making on a Friday or Saturday, since the small dining room fills fast with regulars.
Good for a quick weeknight dinner. It also works for a group order where half the table wants meat-free and the other half won’t notice the swap, or for takeout when plain cheese pizza feels too boring. The paneer pies make this a rare stop where Indian flavor and pizza aren’t fighting for the same plate. They’re on it together.
Veggie Crust closes Mondays. Every other day it opens at 11 a.m., with a mid-afternoon break Tuesday through Thursday before dinner service starts back up around 5. Call ahead on a busy weekend. A kitchen this size can sell out of a popular pie before close.
Delivery runs through Grubhub if you’d rather eat at home. On a packed Friday night, ordering ahead for pickup beats waiting on a table, since the dining room itself is small.
Vegan, kosher, dairy-free: the kitchen juggles all three requests on the same ticket line without slowing down. That’s why Veggie Crust has held its spot on Somerville Ave for a decade now while other pizza places came and went. It figured out how to say yes to a table with four different diets at it, and none of them get the difficult-customer treatment.
