Tane Vegan Izakaya: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Tane Vegan Izakaya is one of the best all-vegan sushi spots in the East Bay, and the only place in Berkeley where you can eat Japanese izakaya food without a single animal product anywhere on the menu. Every dish, every roll, every bowl of ramen is 100% plant-based. If you’re vegetarian or vegan and craving real Japanese food, this is the spot.

What’s vegan and vegetarian at Tane Vegan Izakaya

Everything. Tane is a fully dedicated all-vegan restaurant, which means there’s no fish, no meat, no dairy, and no eggs anywhere in the kitchen. You don’t need to interrogate your server or scan for hidden ingredients. The cooks use vegetables, mushrooms, fruit, and plant-based proteins to recreate the textures and umami depth you’d expect from traditional Japanese cooking. Most specialty sushi rolls are made with gluten-free rice flour, so if you eat gluten-free, you’ll have plenty of options. A handful of items, like the gyoza and da bao, do contain gluten, and the menu marks them clearly.

Signature dishes to order

The sushi rolls are the main event. The Pacifica, Wedge, and Ewa rolls show up in almost every positive review. The Ewa roll layers enoki tempura with smoked beet aioli, avocado, and yuzu seaweed pearls that mimic fish roe. The Manila Dune roll packs lotus root chips, pumpkin tempura, spiced burdock, and avocado crema into one tight bite. For nigiri, the tomato nigiri, with garlic shoyu and shiso, is a standout. Beyond sushi, the Shizen Shiitake and Agedashi Tofu are reliable shared plates, and the Spicy Garlic ramen is a strong pick on a cold night. Ramen bowls run around $18. Specialty rolls land in the $17 to $19 range. Classic rolls and nigiri start as low as $7 to $8. Save room for the yuzu vegan cheesecake.

How to order

Book a reservation. Tane is a small, intimate room, and walk-in waits can stretch to an hour on weeknights. You can reserve through Yelp. Dinner service runs nightly, with the kitchen opening at 4:30pm every day. Friday and Saturday they stay open until 10pm; Sunday through Thursday they close at 9:30pm. If you can’t get a table, they offer pickup through their own site and delivery via DoorDash.

What to watch out for

The space is on the smaller side, and the noise level can climb during peak hours. Seating is described as cozy, which in practice means you may feel a bit close to your neighbors. Parking on Shattuck Ave requires some planning. A few menu items contain gluten (they’re labeled), so gluten-free diners should double-check before ordering the gyoza or the da bao. Service can occasionally run slow when the room fills up, so build in some extra time if you have somewhere to be after.

Is Tane Vegan Izakaya worth it?

Yes. Tane earns its 4.5-star Yelp rating (447 reviews) by doing something genuinely hard: making vegan sushi that doesn’t feel like a compromise. The founders behind this restaurant also created Shizen in San Francisco, one of the best-known vegan sushi bars in the country. The Berkeley location builds on that reputation with local and organic ingredients, gluten-free rice flour in the rolls, and a commitment to protecting oceans by skipping fish entirely. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or just curious, Tane is worth the reservation.
