Souley Vegan: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Souley Vegan is one of the most celebrated plant-based restaurants in the Bay Area, and it earns the hype. Every single dish is 100% vegan, which means you don’t have to quiz the server about hidden dairy or sneak a look at the fine print. Chef-owner Tamearra Dyson built this place from a $27 farmers market stand into a nationally recognized destination, and the current location at 101 Broadway in Oakland’s Jack London Square is her best chapter yet. If you want vegan soul food done right, this is where you go.

What’s vegan and vegetarian at Souley Vegan

Everything on the menu is vegan. That’s not a section of the menu or a special notation. It’s the whole restaurant. Dyson built Souley Vegan as an all-vegan kitchen from day one, so there’s no risk of cross-contamination from meat-based cooking. All proteins, cheeses, and sauces are made in-house from scratch. The “chicken” is housemade seitan. The mac and cheese uses cashew cream. The hot links are housemade, too. You can order anything without asking questions.

Signature dishes to order

Start with the Deez Ain’t Gator Bites, which are Louisiana hot links and Creole-spiced mushrooms served with housemade swamp sauce. It’s a strong opener. The Chik’n and Waffles around $21 is a crowd favorite and gives you a clear sense of how good Dyson’s seitan technique is. The Country Steak Plate around $23 is the seitan showcase dish and ranks among the most popular orders on the menu.

The Okra Gumbo has earned its own legend status, including Oprah’s seal of approval. The Creole Mac around $18 is a good addition if you’re ordering for the table. For dessert, the Beignets are worth ordering even if you’re already full.

How to order

Souley Vegan is open Friday through Sunday. Friday runs 11am to 3pm, then reopens for dinner from 5pm to 9pm. Saturday is 11am to 9pm. Sunday wraps up at 6pm. The restaurant is closed Monday through Thursday, so plan ahead. You can order online through the restaurant’s website for pickup, or catch it through delivery platforms. The Jack London Square location also has a full bar, which makes it a solid dinner destination, not just a quick lunch stop.

What to watch out for

The limited weekly hours are the main catch. Three days a week, with a midday break on Fridays, means you need to be intentional about visiting. The restaurant also went through a significant closure and relocation from its original spot at 301 Broadway, reopening at the current Jack London Square address in summer 2025, so any older reviews or listings may reference a different setup. Portions are generous, which is great value, but means entrees in the $18 to $23 range feel justified. Parking near Jack London Square can be tricky on weekends, so give yourself extra time.

Is Souley Vegan worth it?

Yes, and not just for vegetarians. Souley Vegan has a 4.5-star Google rating across nearly 2,000 reviews and a 4.0 on TripAdvisor, where it ranks in the top 25 out of more than 1,500 Oakland restaurants. Dyson was the first vegan chef to beat Bobby Flay on Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay in 2023, which tells you something about the quality she’s bringing. USA TODAY ranked it one of the top 10 soul food restaurants in the country, full stop. If you’re vegetarian or vegan and in the East Bay, a visit to Souley Vegan belongs at the top of your list. If you’re not vegan but curious, this is the restaurant that might make you rethink what plant-based food can be.
