Seed Shack: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
Seed Shack is an all-vegan burger and taco counter in Gilbert, so you can order anything on the board without asking a single question first.
Two sisters run it out of a suite on East Baseline Road. The cooking is American with an Asian streak: burgers, chili fries and mac and cheese on one half of the menu, lemon sesame tofu tacos and fried spring rolls on the other. The printed menu settles the matter in one line at the bottom of the page. All menu items are plant-based, wheat-free options available. That single sentence does the work that a page of little symbols does at a regular restaurant.
What to order at Seed Shack
Start with the Beet Burger ($17). Its patty is made in house and comes stacked with mashed avocado, cucumber, greens and lemon tahini. Want something less earthy? The Black Bean Burger ($16) swaps in tomato and onion under the same tahini. Both arrive with a side. If you would rather eat a name you already know, the Beyond Burger ($18) and the Impossible Burger ($19) are both here with cashew cheese and fancy sauce. Order the Impossible in its PB and J build if you want the odd one, which is peanut butter, berry sambal jelly, wonton crisp and cucumber on a burger.
Tacos cost less and travel better. Lemon Sesame Tofu Tacos ($13) are fried tofu with slaw, sesame and cilantro. Cauliflower Chickpea Tacos ($15) go southwest with cabbage and mashed avocado. For the middle of the table, get the Buffalo Cauliflower Nachos ($14) or the Truffle Bacon Mac and Cheese ($13), which is built on truffle cashew cream with rice bacon bits stirred through.
Save room. The Banana Sundae ($9.50) layers soy vanilla nice cream with salted caramel, banana and cacao nibs. Fried cinnamon Pineapple Rolls ($12) come with the same nice cream and the same caramel.
The kitchen situation
No animal products come through the door, so there’s no shared grill question and no fryer question. The kitchen does share equipment across its own menu and says so plainly: peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat and sesame are all in the building, and the staff won’t guarantee against cross contact. Gluten is the allergen to plan around here, not dairy. Wheat-free options exist and a gluten-free bun is a $2 add-on.
The practical stuff
Seed Shack sits at 3861 E Baseline Rd, suite K-136, in Gilbert. It opens 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, closed Monday. Call (480) 488-8217. Burgers and sandwiches run $13 to $19 and sides land between $5 and $8, so two people eat well for around $45. It’s counter service with dine-in and takeout, and delivery goes through GrubHub. Kids get a $10 plate of tofu nuggets, fries or mac and cashew cheese with fruit and a juice box.
The reason to drive here instead of ordering a plain bean burrito somewhere closer is the range. Most vegans in the East Valley pick between two safe items at a mixed restaurant. Here the choice is between a beet patty, a jackfruit sandwich, buffalo ranch fried soy chick’n and a Dubai Lover dessert with pistachio and kataifi, and every one of them is already fine to eat.
