Rhythm ’N Wraps: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Rhythm ‘N Wraps is an all-vegan restaurant in Allston, so the entire board is open to you, including the burgers, the cheesesteak and the weekend waffles.

It began as a Boston food truck in 2012, spent a few years parked outside Boston University and the Harvard Science Center, and settled into a storefront on Commonwealth Avenue in 2018. The cooking pulls from Caribbean, Southern and Mexican kitchens rather than from a salad bar. Seitan, jackfruit and oyster mushrooms do the work that meat does elsewhere, and the kitchen leans on Violife cheese and JUST egg for the rest.

What to order at Rhythm ‘N Wraps

Wraps are the house specialty and every one runs $12. The Gangsta Wrap is smoked apple sage seitan in a sweet and spicy jerk hoisin sauce with greens, tomato, scallions, a half-sour pickle and tahini goddess dressing. Guru Jazz brings Italian seitan and smoked tempeh bacon with sauteed peppers and onions. Prefer no cooked protein at all? The Raw Wrap layers arugula, avocado, purple cabbage, carrots, cucumber, sprouts and edamame with a thai almond dressing. Pick flour, wheat or spinach for the tortilla, spinach costs a dollar more.

Burgers come with fries. The Impossible Burger ($16) stacks Violife cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle and chipotle mayo on a pretzel bun. The Big Shug ($19) adds mac and cheese and avocado to the same build. If you want a patty that isn’t trying to be beef, the Beantown Burger ($16) is black beans, oyster mushrooms and quinoa.

Two plates stand out beyond the sandwiches. The Philly Cheesesteak ($18) puts seasoned Impossible meat and Italian seitan on a hoagie with cheese sauce, peppers and mushrooms. The Golden Chickpea Curry Bowl ($16) is chickpeas and potatoes in spiced coconut curry with kale and collards, yellow rice and sweet plantains. Sides worth adding: crispy oyster mushrooms with the house sauce ($8), tostones ($6) or a grilled mac and cheese ($7).

Weekend brunch runs until 4 p.m. Chick’n ‘n Waffles ($16) is a Belgian waffle with crispy oyster mushrooms, agave, strawberries, banana and hot sauce. The Breakfast Burrito ($12) uses JUST egg with breakfast potatoes, black beans and avocado.

The kitchen situation

Nothing animal comes into the kitchen, so cross-contact with meat or dairy isn’t a question you need to ask. Gluten is, and the menu carries its own Gluten-Free Rhythm section. The Sol Salad is marked gluten free outright. The Raw Wrap contains nuts and the menu says so.

The practical stuff

Find it at 1096 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02134. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. It closes Monday. Call (617) 566-4144. Most plates run $12 to $19, so lunch for two lands near $30. Parking is metered out front on Comm Ave, and the restaurant points people toward free two-hour street parking around the corner on Naples Road. Catering is available.

Dessert deserves a line of its own. The case holds house versions of the candy bars you gave up, sold as Better Than Theirs, Crunchee and Spacebar. Order one on the way out.
