My Thai Vegan Cafe: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
One flight up from the street in Boston’s Chinatown, above Pho Pasteur at the corner of Beach and Washington, this whole menu is vegan. Zero dairy. Zero eggs. Nothing hides fish sauce in the curry paste. Every protein on the menu, chicken, beef, shrimp, is a plant-based stand-in, and the kitchen has had decades in this neighborhood to get the substitutions right.
Start with the pumpkin curry, a coconut-based red curry loaded with roasted pumpkin that eats like a main course, not a side. Pad thai and pad see ew both come with a choice of tofu or mock meats, and the noodles arrive with real char from the wok rather than a steam-table softness. The tofu chicken fingers are a favorite for a reason. They fry up crisp and hold their shape in the sauce instead of going soggy the second they hit the plate. Wonton soup and tom yum both use a vegetable broth built to taste like something, not water with lime floating in it. Finish with a boba milk tea made on a non-dairy base, standard here rather than a special request.
Everything is vegan by default. Cross-contamination with meat, dairy, or eggs isn’t a kitchen risk you have to flag, and there’s no separate vegan menu bolted onto a regular one. This is the regular menu.
This Beach Street spot dates to 2008, tucked into Chinatown long enough to show up in vegan Boston guides going back years and still pull a full house on a weeknight. The restaurant started out in a Brookline storefront, a former Buddha’s Delight space, before that original location closed in 2009 and Chinatown became the only address. Order at the register, grab a table, and the food comes out fast. That makes it a solid stop for a quick lunch between meetings, or a low-key group dinner where nobody negotiates over who gets stuck with the side salad.
Portions run generous for the price. The menu runs long, rice dishes, noodle dishes, a full curry section, salads, a handful of Chinese-leaning plates, so a table of four can order four different things and nobody repeats. It stays open late most nights, useful in a neighborhood where plenty of kitchens close early. Delivery runs through the usual apps if you’d rather not climb the stairs, and the reviews back up the reputation: well over a thousand of them on Yelp alone, most of them good.
If you’re gluten-sensitive, ask before you order. Some noodle and sauce bases may carry wheat even though nothing here carries meat or dairy. A restaurant that’s spent decades perfecting a vegan menu is worth trusting to give you a straight answer rather than a shrug. Takeout works too. Order at the counter upstairs, then walk it back down to Beach Street and eat wherever you’re headed next.
Chinatown has no shortage of good food. Very little of it is built entirely around plant-based cooking. My Thai Vegan Cafe has held that gap for close to two decades without compromising the concept to keep the lights on.
