Lotus Vegan: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Lotus Vegan in North Hollywood is one of the San Fernando Valley’s most beloved all-vegan restaurants, and it’s been that way since 2007. Every single item on the menu is plant-based, so you don’t have to scan ingredients or quiz the server. You just order. The kitchen leans heavily on Thai classics with a handful of American comfort food staples mixed in, all made without meat, dairy, or eggs.

What’s vegan and vegetarian at Lotus Vegan

The entire menu is vegan. There’s no hidden dairy, no fish sauce, no beef broth. The kitchen uses plant-based proteins throughout, including soy and wheat gluten, to recreate the texture of chicken, shrimp, and duck. That means everything from the pad thai to the curries to the desserts qualifies as both vegan and vegetarian. The restaurant is family-owned and Black-owned, and they’re transparent about using organic ingredients where possible. Some dishes can also be prepared oil-free on request, with vegetable broth swapped in instead.

Signature dishes to order

The orange chicken is the dish people talk about most. It hits the sweet and tangy notes of the takeout classic without any of the animal products. The hot wings are another fan favorite, with reviewers calling them the best vegan wings they’ve tried anywhere. On the Thai side, the panang curry and yellow curry are rich and fragrant, the fresh spring rolls are clean and light, and the basil noodles are a solid lunch pick. For dessert, the banana beignets with coconut ice cream are worth saving room for. Lunch combo specials are available Wednesday through Sunday and offer good value.

How to order

You can dine in, call ahead for takeout at (818) 760-8088, or order online through their Toast page at order.toasttab.com/online/lotusveganla. Delivery is available through third-party apps. Reservations are accepted if you’re coming with a group. Parking is available on the side of the building, which helps given the Lankershim Blvd location. The restaurant is closed Mondays. Lunch service runs 11:30am to 3:30pm Wednesday through Sunday (noon on Saturday), with dinner from 4:30pm to 9:30pm most nights. Tuesday is dinner only.

What to watch out for

Gluten-free diners should ask before ordering, since many of the plant-based proteins here are made from wheat gluten. The restaurant doesn’t advertise specific gluten-free options, so it’s worth checking with the staff on each dish. Prices have climbed a bit over the years, though most entrees still land under $16 and portions are generous. Monday closures catch people off guard, so double-check before you drive over. And if you want a table on a weekend evening, call ahead or plan to wait.

Is Lotus Vegan worth it?

Yes, especially if you’re in the Valley and want a fully plant-based meal that doesn’t taste like a compromise. With a 4.6 on Google across over 600 reviews and 1,400 reviews on Yelp, this place has built real loyalty over nearly two decades. Non-vegan guests tend to be just as happy as vegan regulars, which says a lot about the quality of the cooking. If you want Thai food done right without any animal products anywhere in the kitchen, Lotus Vegan delivers.
