Koshari Mama: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Koshari Mama is a fully vegan Egyptian restaurant on Somerville Avenue. The name gives away the star dish. Koshari is Egypt’s national comfort food, a pile of rice, lentils, and pasta topped with crispy fried onions and a tangy tomato sauce, and this kitchen makes it without a trace of animal product. Order it first. You’ll understand why regulars keep coming back for a $14 bowl.

The rest of the menu leans on plant-based versions of Cairo street food and home cooking both. The shawerma bowl swaps in seasoned mushroom for the usual spit-roasted meat. Egyptian “meatballs,” listed in quotes because they’re built from lentils and spices, land in a tomato sauce that tastes like it’s simmered all day. Mushroom shawerma and the “CKN” salad, a play on chicken made from a plant protein, both hit the same texture and char people expect from the animal version.

This isn’t vegetarian-with-a-vegan-option. Everything is vegan: the mezza platter of hummus, babaghanoush, and muhammara, and the desserts, Om Ali and konafa, all of it. A lactose-intolerant customer orders anything on the board without a single follow-up question to the server, something regulars mention in their own reviews.

Falafel, tabbouleh, and fattoush round out the starters, most marked gluten-free on the menu alongside the mains that qualify. Feeding a group with mixed diets? Order the Mama’s Mezza Platter for the table and let people build their own plate from there.

Women-owned, and it’s built a loyal following in Somerville since opening. Regulars praise the staff for a warm welcome as much as the food. This is a sit-down spot, not a grab-and-go counter, so budget for a full dinner. Mains run $15 to $25, with the pricier plates like the mushroom shawerma and the Egyptian “meatballs” landing at the top of that range. The charcuterie platter, built from plant-based ingredients rather than any cured meat, works well for a table that wants to share before mains arrive.

Hours run Wednesday through Saturday from late morning into the evening, Sunday a little shorter. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Don’t show up on a Tuesday night expecting koshari, and call ahead if you’re planning a visit around the start of the week.

The space is wheelchair accessible. Delivery runs through the usual apps if you’d rather eat the shawerma bowl on your own couch instead of at a table.

Order the Mezza (GF option available) if you want a lighter sampler instead of a full plate, or the Sanyet El Batates dinner special when it’s running. Prices sit in the middle of Somerville’s restaurant scene: not a cheap counter meal, not a special-occasion splurge either, just a solid weeknight dinner out that happens to be entirely plant-based.

What makes this place worth the trip isn’t just that it’s vegan. Plenty of restaurants are vegan and forgettable. Koshari Mama takes dishes most Americans have never heard of, from a cuisine that rarely gets attention in Boston, and makes the case that Egyptian comfort food didn’t need meat in the first place. The lentils and rice in that koshari bowl were doing the heavy lifting the whole time.
