Green New American Vegetarian: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Green New American Vegetarian is a 100% vegan comfort-food restaurant with locations in Phoenix and Tempe, and it’s the place most Arizona vegans send a skeptical friend to first.

Chef and owner Damon Brasch built the menu around the food people already miss rather than around vegetables people should eat more of. Buffalo wings, cheesesteaks, drive-through style burgers, soft serve. All of it is plant-based, made with house vegan cheeses and mock meats, and the kitchen leans organic and non-GMO where it can. Nothing on the menu needs a substitution, because there’s nothing to substitute.

What to order at Green

Begin with the Buffalo “Wings” ($9), which come with vegetables and house ranch and are marked gluten free. Order them in espresso barbecue or huney jalapeno instead if you want a change, or get all three sauces on the $26.50 platter. Big Easy Cheezy Nachos ($15) bury corn chips under taco crumbles, house easy cheezy sauce, grilled onions and pickled jalapenos.

The burgers are the reason the room fills up. Street Burgers start at $9 for a single, $12 for the Dub Dub with two patties and $15 for the Trips with three. Big Wac ($13.50) is the special-sauce-and-sesame-seed-bun build most people picture, and the Colossal Wac ($21) stacks four patties with double cheeze. Fleetwood Wac ($16) goes southwest with spicy cheddar cheeze, roasted jalapeno and avocado. Eating gluten free? The Lil gf Wac ($16.50) is the same sandwich on a gluten-free bun.

Noodle bowls all run $16 and travel better than the burgers do. Damn Dan Noodle brings a dark tamari, soy and peanut sauce with beefy crumbles, mushrooms and cabbage. Golden Curry uses coconut and maple madras with sprouted tofu. Firecracker Red Curry brings seitan steak and heat. On the lighter side, the Dagobah Jungle salad ($13) tops greens with jerk-spiced fried brussels sprouts and it’s soy free. Tacos are $6.25 each, either an Ultimo with spicy beef crumbles or a San Diego “Fish” made from nori tempura tofu.

Finish with tSoynami, the house soft serve, hand-made daily in small batches. It has its own menu.

The kitchen situation

Every item in both kitchens is plant-based, so cross-contact with meat or dairy isn’t possible. Allergens are a different story and the restaurant is blunt about it. Wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, mushrooms and seeds are all present, and the kitchen won’t guarantee against cross-contact between them. Many items carry a gluten-free mark on the menu, including the wings, the fries and several bowls.

The practical stuff

The Phoenix location is at 2022 N 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85006, reachable at (602) 258-1870. Tempe is at 2240 N Scottsdale Rd, suite 113, at (480) 941-9003. Both open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Most plates land between $9 and $16, which makes this one of the cheaper full meals in the directory’s all-vegan tier. Pickup and delivery run through the usual apps, and catering is available.

Bring someone who eats meat. Hand them a Big Wac and thyme fries and skip the explanation, because that’s exactly what the menu was designed to do.
