Golden Corral: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Golden Corral doesn’t market a meatless entree, but the buffet format hands you full control anyway. Since you build every plate yourself, skipping meat comes down to knowing which “vegetable” dishes are secretly cooked with ham and which ones are genuinely safe to load up on.

What to order at Golden Corral

Start at the salad bar with the build-your-own garden salad, fresh fruit, or the three-bean and marinated vegetable salads, all vegan. A plain baked potato or sweet potato, ordered without butter or sour cream, is vegan too, and so is white, yellow, or Mexican rice once you confirm it isn’t made with chicken broth. Plain spaghetti, penne, or lo mein tossed with oil or salsa instead of red sauce rounds out a real meal.

What to watch out for

The seasoning is where things go wrong. Collard and turnip greens are only safe when they’re the “seasoned” version, not “Southern style,” which usually means ham hock. The marinara and Italian red sauce are flagged as containing milk, so they’re vegetarian but not vegan. Fried items like okra, fries, and onion rings run through a shared fryer with an egg-and-dairy batter, and mashed potatoes with gravy often aren’t vegetarian at all, since the gravy frequently isn’t meat-free. Ask a staff member before you assume anything on the line is safe.
