Garden Patch by the Sea: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
Garden Patch by the Sea is a fully vegan restaurant on Wollaston Beach in Quincy. It built its whole identity on a trick most vegan kitchens don’t attempt: seafood. The lobster roll here is made from hearts of palm, shredded and dressed the way a New England seafood shack dresses one. It sits alongside vegan fish and chips, battered clam strips, and crab cakes, all built on the same plant-based playbook. Grew up on New England seafood shacks and gave up meat since? This is the closest thing to that exact menu without the animal in it.
Order the fish and chips first. It’s the dish people drive across the South Shore for: a crisp battered fillet next to fries, served with the same tartar-and-malt-vinegar setup as any Wollaston Beach clam shack. The lobster roll comes next, split-top bun and all. That hearts-of-palm filling has the bite and brine of the shellfish it’s standing in for. Crab cakes round out the seafood section, pan-fried and served with a remoulade.
The kitchen doesn’t stop at seafood. There’s a Buddha salad built around tofu, an Impossible Burger, cauliflower tacos, pizza, and a rotating list of dairy-free ice cream for dessert. The buffalo chick’n salad uses a plant-based chicken substitute dressed in the same hot-sauce-and-butter blend. It reads like the animal version until you remember it isn’t.
This is a seasonal operation. Open spring through fall, closed for winter, typically starting in November. Check ahead if you’re planning a late-year visit, since the exact close date shifts season to season. Hours run Tuesday through Sunday. Monday’s closed.
The setting carries much of the appeal beyond the food itself. It sits directly on Quincy Shore Drive with a patio and outdoor seating looking out over Quincy Bay. The Boston skyline is visible across the water on a clear day. Indoor seating tops out around thirty people, so on a warm weekend the outdoor tables fill first and a short wait isn’t unusual.
Prices run in line with a casual seafood shack. Sandwiches and rolls sit in the mid-teens, salads a little higher, sides and ice cream cheap enough to add on without a second thought. It’s a solid stop for a beach day lunch or a first date that wants a view without a formal dress code. Bring a skeptical seafood-loving friend and let the texture make the argument for you.
Because the whole kitchen is vegan, there’s no shared fryer with a real fish basket and no seafood counter doing double duty. Anyone with a shellfish allergy still needs to ask about ingredients directly, since the menu is built to mimic that flavor closely. But there’s no animal protein anywhere on site to cross with a strict vegetarian or vegan order.
Vegan lobster rolls show up on plenty of menus as a token item. Not here. The entire kitchen is built around getting hearts of palm and mushroom to do a shellfish counter’s job. It does that job well enough that the view isn’t the only reason people come back.
