Avant Garden is the rare restaurant where the food earns its reputation before you even notice it’s all vegan. Since 2015, chef Tony Mongeluzzi and founder Ravi DeRossi have been turning out some of New York City’s most celebrated plant-based cooking from a moody, candlelit second-floor dining room in the East Village. What’s vegan and vegetarian at Avant Garden

Everything. The menu is 100% vegan, so you don’t have to scan for labels or ask your server to check with the kitchen on substitutions. Every dish, every dessert, every cocktail is plant-based. The menu is also almost entirely whole-food rather than mock-meat territory. You’re eating vegetables, mushrooms, grains, and house-made pastas, not imitation proteins. Plenty of dishes are also nut-free and marked gluten-free, and toasts can be swapped to gluten-free bread on request. The kitchen isn’t a dedicated gluten-free facility, so if you have celiac disease, ask before ordering.

Signature dishes to order

The mushroom section alone makes a strong case for the whole restaurant. Avant Garden organizes its menu around what it calls the Third Kingdom, a roster of preparations built entirely on fungi. The Hen of the Woods, gluten-free and nut-free, comes with mushroom puree and pickled hon shimeji and is one of the dishes that keeps regulars coming back. The Maitake Mille-Feuille layers flavors in a way that feels closer to fine French technique than typical vegetarian cooking. Beyond the mushrooms, the Scorched Cauliflower with toasted garlic and fried capers is a consistent standout, and the avocado over crispy miso-glazed rice is better than it sounds. Save room for the chocolate lava cake, but order it at the start of the meal since it needs 45 minutes.

How to order

Avant Garden is a small-plates restaurant, and the menu works best when you order several dishes to share. Plan on three to four plates for two people, plus a dessert. Reservations are strongly recommended and open 21 days in advance through Resy. The restaurant draws a date-night crowd most evenings, so weeknights are a little easier to book than weekends. The drinks list leans into natural wines from small producers, worth exploring if that’s your thing.

What to watch out for

The dining room is intimate, which is a polite way of saying it’s small. On a busy night it gets warm and a little loud, and the second-floor location means there are stairs. Prices run on the higher end for New York City vegetarian dining, with most plates between $20 and $29, so a full dinner for two with drinks can reach $120 to $150 before tip. Some reviewers feel the portions don’t quite match the price, so go in knowing you’re paying for a fine-dining experience rather than a filling neighborhood dinner.

If you’re looking for serious cooking that treats vegetables as the main event rather than a backup option, yes.
