What’s Vegetarian at Honey Baked Ham? (Updated for 2026)

Looking for Honey Baked Ham vegetarian options? You can eat here, but you’ll build your meal from a sandwich, a salad, and sides. Honey Baked Ham sells spiral-sliced ham, so the center of the store is meat. Your best picks are the California Veggie Sandwich, the Garden Salad, and a few sides you should ask about first. (The company spells its name HoneyBaked, and we use the spelling most people search.) We also cover what’s vegetarian at more than 300 other chains.

A Quick Look at Honey Baked Ham

Harry J. Hoenselaar opened the first HoneyBaked store in Detroit in 1957. He had patented a spiral-slicing ham machine, and he sold his hams cut that way with a sweet, crunchy glaze. Wikipedia, citing The New York Times, says he built the prototype slicer from a tire jack, a pie tin, a washing machine motor, and a knife.

The company still calls itself family-owned. Hoenselaar’s granddaughter Linda van Rees moved the headquarters to Alpharetta, Georgia, in 2015, per Wikipedia. In a January 2026 release, Honey Baked Ham said it had grown to more than 400 locations nationwide and opened 12 new stores in 2025. Franchisees run some stores and the company runs others, so menus and prices vary from one to the next.

Go Dairy Free calls the chain legendary for its takeaway holiday feasts. Year round, the stores also sell sandwiches, salads, sides, and desserts. That’s where a vegetarian finds a meal.

Honey Baked Ham Vegetarian Options: What to Order

We built the table below from Go Dairy Free’s Honey Baked Ham guide, which Alisa Fleming updated in February 2026, plus a Sacramento-area store menu. Honey Baked Ham’s own menu pages load only with JavaScript, and we couldn’t read an official ingredient list for most items. So we mark anything unconfirmed with a ⚠️ and say why. Call your store before you order if you eat strictly vegetarian.

Short version: the sandwich and the salad are your safest bets. The sides read as meatless but come with a caveat, and the ham, turkey, ribs, and bacon are out.

Sandwiches and Salads

The California Veggie Sandwich is the one item built for vegetarians. A Sacramento-area store menu describes it as smashed avocado spread with leafy greens, cucumber, tomato, red onions, and black olives. That store marks it vegetarian. Go Dairy Free tags it with gluten and soy and puts it on its vegan menu.

The Roasted Tomato Sandwich comes next, and it’s meatless either way. For a vegan version, Go Dairy Free says to order it with no cheese and a vegan spread in place of the mayo and dressing. Go Dairy Free tags the standard build with egg, gluten, and soy.

Most of the other sandwiches use ham, turkey, bacon, or chicken salad, Skip those, and the Turkey BLT Salad too. The Garden Salad is the vegetarian pick. For a dairy-free salad, Go Dairy Free says to order it without cheese or croutons, since the Corn Bread Croutons contain milk. Ken’s Balsamic Vinaigrette is the dairy-free dressing. Watch the label, though. Fleming warns that some stores stock a Highland Balsamic Vinaigrette made with milk.

Heat-and-Serve Sides

You’ll lean on the sides for a vegetarian plate, and they’re why people ask about Honey Baked Ham vegetarian options in the first place. Go Dairy Free says all eight Heat & Serve sides contain milk. They are the Cinnamon Apples, Honey Baked Beans, Green Bean Casserole, Country Cornbread Stuffing, Smashed Potatoes, Maple Sweet Potato Soufflé, Gravy, and Tuscan Style Broccoli.

So vegans skip every side. Vegetarians still have choices. Honey Baked Ham hasn’t published an ingredient list for these, and no source we found names bacon, ham, or broth in the sweet potato soufflé, smashed potatoes, or green bean casserole. Nobody has confirmed they’re meat-free, either. Cooks often make baked beans with pork and stuffing with broth. Treat the Honey Baked Beans and the cornbread stuffing as the riskiest picks. Check with staff before you add them to your tray.

Skip the gravy unless the store confirms its base. Go Dairy Free lists it as a milk-containing item and doesn’t name what else goes in.

Breads, Sauces, and Soup Mixes

Go Dairy Free puts six breads on its vegan list: the Baker’s Roll, Ciabatta, Flour Tortilla, Mini Twist Roll, Sourdough Bread, and White Mountain Dinner Roll. Fleming contradicts herself, though. Her component list tags the Baker’s Roll with egg. She also warns that Mini Twist Rolls vary by store, and some contain egg. Croissants, the side dinner rolls, and Hawaiian sweet rolls contain milk. Go Dairy Free tags the Sliced Multigrain with gluten only.

Sauces vary. Go Dairy Free puts Marinara, Red Pepper Jelly, and Cranberry Walnut Chutney on its vegan list. Fleming tags the mayonnaise spreads, the Honey Mustard Mayonnaise, and the Horseradish Sauce with egg. Gravies and butter spreads contain milk.

Honey Baked Ham also sells Split Pea, White Bean, and Mixed Bean soup mixes. A reader asked Go Dairy Free about the ham bone in the names, and Go Dairy Free replied that the mixes contain no ham or ham bone. Cooks often add a ham bone to these soups, and you don’t have to. Go Dairy Free lists all three mixes as vegan, but read the package to confirm.

What’s Vegan at Honey Baked Ham?

Not much, and it takes work. Go Dairy Free names three vegan lunches: the California Veggie Sandwich, a Garden Salad with vegan balsamic vinaigrette, or a no-cheese Roasted Tomato Sandwich with a vegan spread. Add the vegan breads above, the soup mixes, and toppings like roasted tomatoes, red onion, pickle chips, and Craisins.

The heat-and-serve sides, desserts, and gravies all contain milk, so vegans skip them. Ask which bread your store uses for the sandwiches, because Go Dairy Free tags a couple of its vegan-list rolls with egg elsewhere in the guide.

Special Dietary Requirements and Allergies

Fleming tags milk, egg, gluten, soy, and tree nuts item by item. She calls Honey Baked Ham quite transparent about allergens. Every cake, pie, and cookie contains milk. Honey Baked Ham makes its sliders on King’s Hawaiian rolls, which contain dairy. Go Dairy Free says the Crispy Onions have no milk but come with a milk cross-contact warning.

Cross-contact is the larger risk for vegetarians. A store that slices ham and turkey may build your sandwich nearby, and no source we found says how stores handle that. Ask the person behind the counter to change gloves before they build yours. We found no gelatin, lard, or fryer information from any source. Asking about bacon in the beans and broth in the stuffing is the best use of your time.

Tips for Vegetarians at Honey Baked Ham

  • Order the California Veggie Sandwich and ask which bread your store uses.
  • Skip the Broccoli Bacon Bliss, since bacon is right in the name.
  • Ask your store for the ingredient statement on the Honey Baked Beans and the Country Cornbread Stuffing before you add them.
  • Build a sides plate of Smashed Potatoes, Maple Sweet Potato Soufflé, and Tuscan Style Broccoli, and confirm each has no meat stock.
  • Request your sandwich with no cheese and no mayo if you want it vegan, and ask for the vegan spread.
  • Ask whether your store stocks Ken’s Balsamic Vinaigrette or the Highland Balsamic, which contains milk, before you order a vegan Garden Salad.
  • Check your local store’s menu, since Go Dairy Free notes that a few breads are regional.

Conclusion

Honey Baked Ham isn’t a vegetarian destination, but you won’t go hungry if you plan. Order the California Veggie Sandwich or the Garden Salad, add a side or two after you confirm the ingredients, and skip anything with ham, turkey, or bacon in the name.
