Taco Bell: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Taco Bell runs an American Vegetarian Association-certified menu, which puts it ahead of nearly every other big fast-food chain when it comes to eating meat-free. The certification means you can trust the labeling instead of cross-referencing ingredient lists on your own, and nearly every burrito, taco, or bowl on the menu turns vegetarian with one simple swap.

What to order at Taco Bell

Start with the Bean Burrito or the Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, both vegetarian as served with no swap required. Most other burritos, tacos, and bowls, including the Crunchwrap Supreme, the Veggie Mexican Pizza, and the Power Menu Bowl, become vegetarian the moment you ask for black beans or potatoes instead of beef or chicken. Black beans, refried beans, guacamole, seasoned rice, and the Nacho Fries are all vegan exactly as they come off the line.

What to watch out for

The catch is that the AVA certification is lacto-ovo, so it allows dairy and eggs but not other animal byproducts. That means you still need to drop the cheese and sour cream on several vegetarian picks to push them all the way to vegan, and the chipotle sauce on the Spicy Potato Soft Taco contains egg. Menu items rotate more than you’d expect at a chain this size, so confirm anything you’re counting on before you order and treat any single visit as a snapshot, not a guarantee.
