McAlister’s Deli: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

McAlister’s Deli is known for hand-crafted sandwiches and oven-baked Giant Spuds, most of them loaded with meat. But the vegetarian bench is deeper than it first looks. You get a purpose-built Veggie Sandwich, a Veggie Spud, customizable salads, and a meatless Veggie Chili, all real options rather than afterthoughts. The chain’s roots trace back to a converted gas station in Oxford, Mississippi, and that scrappy start still shows in how much gets made in-house.

What to order at McAlister’s Deli

The Veggie Sandwich comes loaded with spinach, tomato, cucumber, red onion, roasted bell peppers, avocado, and herb mayo on 9-grain bread, skip the mayo and pick a vegan bread to make it fully vegan. The Veggie Spud loads a Giant Spud with spinach, broccoli, red onions, and roasted peppers, and it goes vegan if you ask for no butter and skip the RO*TEL cheese sauce. The Veggie Chili and a Garden Salad without cheese or croutons round out the vegan-friendly picks.

What to watch out for

Grilled Cheese and the Pecanberry Salad both contain dairy or cheese, so they’re vegetarian only. The build-your-own sandwich, salad, and spud options make it easy to end up with hidden dairy or egg if you don’t ask, herb mayo and RO*TEL cheese sauce are the two most common culprits. Stick to confirmed vegan condiments like yellow mustard, balsamic vinaigrette, and cranberry sauce if you’re avoiding animal products.
