Masa of Echo Park: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
Masa of Echo Park has been making Chicago deep dish pizza in Los Angeles since 2004. It runs a whole separate vegan menu alongside the regular one, not an afterthought. Look for the “For Our Vegan Friends” section. That’s where the real options are.
The centerpiece is the Vegan Echo Park. Build your own. This tavern-style pizza starts at $18 and uses Teese vegan mozzarella instead of dairy cheese. Want the restaurant’s signature format instead? The deep dish comes in a vegan version too, though it costs more. A three-topping vegan deep dish runs around $30. The specialty dairy pies run $31.50 to $38.50. That gap is worth knowing before you sit down with a group that wants to split a pie.
Outside of pizza, the vegan section covers real range. A fettuccine comes tossed with sun-dried tomato, kalamata olives, capers, basil, parsley, and garlic in olive oil, finished with vegan parmesan. Grilled or blackened veggie chicken wraps round out the list. So does a seasoned veggie burger, built on Masa’s own Cuban roll with a choice of vegan cheddar or provolone. That’s enough to build a full dinner without touching the dairy menu at all.
The rest of the menu isn’t vegetarian by default. Sweet Italian Sausage & Mushroom deep dish is the house specialty. Tavern-style and panini sections lean heavily on meat and dairy too. Fine for a mixed table. Everyone eats off the same menu. But the vegan dishes come out of a kitchen that also handles meat and dairy pizza daily. Nothing on the website says whether they get a dedicated oven run or separate prep surfaces. Call ahead if strict cross-contact avoidance matters to you.
Prices land in the $20 to $30 range for a typical order. Deep dish pushes toward the higher end. Sandwiches and tavern-style pies keep it lower. That puts Masa in the middle of the LA pizza market, not a splurge, but not the cheapest slice either.
Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park sees plenty of walk-in traffic. Online orders and reservations run through the restaurant’s own site, plus DoorDash for delivery. Bringing a group where half the table eats everything and half wants strictly plant-based? This is one of the few pizza spots in the area where both halves order a full meal, dessert-adjacent options included, without anyone settling for a side salad.
Want the restaurant at its most distinctive? Order the deep dish. Want to control every topping and know exactly what’s on your plate? Build your own Vegan Echo Park.
