India Quality: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
India Quality marks every vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dish right on its menu, so you can order at this Kenmore Square restaurant without interviewing the server first.
The legend sits at the bottom of the page: GF for gluten free, VG for vegan, V for vegetarian. That’s rarer than it should be. At most North Indian restaurants the vegetarian half of the menu is large and unlabeled, and you’re left guessing which creamy sauces started with actual cream. Here the guessing is done for you. The restaurant sits at 484 Commonwealth Avenue near Boston University, serves beer and wine, and asks you to flag food allergies before ordering.
What to order at India Quality
The Vegetable Specialties section runs about twenty dishes, all served with basmati rice and your pick of mild, medium or hot. Baingan Bhartha ($14.95) is eggplant charred over an open flame and mashed. Garlic, onions and peas finish it. Channa Masala ($14.95) puts chickpeas in a creamy tomato sauce. Bhindi Masala ($14.95) is okra with onions, garlic, ginger, tomatoes and bell peppers. Get that one if you think you don’t like okra.
Eating dairy? Paneer shows up several ways. Saag Paneer ($14.95) sets homemade cheese in spinach, Matar Paneer ($14.95) pairs it with green peas, and Shahi Paneer ($15.95) goes richest with bell peppers in a creamy tomato sauce. Skipping dairy instead? Tofu Masala and Tofu Bhurji both run $14.95 and use organic tofu, and the lentil dishes go lighter still. Tarka Dal ($13.95) and Aloo Matar ($13.95) are the cheapest full plates on the menu.
Start with the Vegetarian Platter ($8.95). It brings vegetable pakora, a samosa, a cutlet and saag tikki on one plate for less than two appetizers cost. Order breads to share: spinach roti ($3.95), onion nan ($4.25) or the bread basket ($8.95) with aloo nan, onion pratha and chapati.
What to watch for
This is a meat-serving restaurant, and chicken, lamb, shrimp and fish take up most of the menu. The vegetarian marks tell you what’s meatless, not how it was cooked. Ask about the tandoor if that matters to you. Breads and kebabs usually share one oven at a North Indian restaurant, and nothing published here says otherwise. One more catch: the vegetable cutlet appetizer contains paneer, so it’s vegetarian and not vegan.
The practical stuff
India Quality is at 484 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215. It opens 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call (617) 267-4499. Vegetable entrees run $13.95 to $15.95 with rice included, so two people eat for around $40 before drinks. Reservations, takeout, delivery and catering all run through the restaurant’s own site.
Twenty labeled vegetable entrees under $16, a block from the Green Line, is a good deal in a neighborhood full of places where the meatless option is a side salad.
