In-N-Out Burger: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
In-N-Out is a burger chain first, so its vegetarian menu is short. What you get is real, though. Ask for the Veggie Burger or the Grilled Cheese and any location can make it, since both are built into the standard ordering system even though neither one shows up on the printed menu.
What to order at In-N-Out Burger
The Veggie Burger comes as a regular burger minus the patty, with a toasted bun, lettuce, tomato, onion, and Spread. Order it without Spread and cheese, add ketchup and mustard, and it turns vegan. The Grilled Cheese swaps in two slices of American cheese instead, which keeps it vegetarian but not vegan. Round out either order with French Fries, vegan as served, or a milkshake if you eat dairy. Both sandwiches can be ordered Protein Style too, with a lettuce wrap replacing the bun.
What to watch out for
The Spread contains egg, so the Veggie Burger and Grilled Cheese are vegetarian, not vegan, as normally served. Don’t assume Animal Style is a safe vegetarian upgrade either. It piles on extra Spread and mustard cooked into the patty, and since the Veggie Burger has no patty anyway, you’re better off just asking for grilled onions and extra Spread directly. There’s no plant-based patty on the menu at all, Impossible or Beyond, so don’t go in expecting one. And don’t expect the Veggie Burger to eat like a Double-Double. Without a patty, it’s a lighter sandwich, so plan on ordering fries alongside it or doubling up if you want more food.
