Captain D’s: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Captain D’s is a seafood chain, and it doesn’t hide the catch: there’s no vegetarian entree on the menu. Every headline item, from the batter-dipped fish to the Giant Fish Sandwich, is built around fish, shrimp, or chicken. That means a vegetarian meal here comes entirely from the sides, not the main board.

What to order at Captain D’s

Order the baked potato, broccoli, and corn on the cob, all of which turn vegan once you skip the butter and sour cream. Add a side salad without cheese, and you’ve got a real plate. For drinks, the fountain sodas, sweet tea, and fruit smoothies (Peach, Strawberry, Tropical Mango) are all vegan as listed.

What to watch out for

French fries aren’t a sure thing here. Some Captain D’s locations fry them in beef tallow instead of soybean oil, so ask before you order a batch. Several fried sides that look plant-based, like hush puppies, mozzarella sticks, fried okra, and jalapeno poppers, actually contain milk and egg. That keeps them vegetarian, but it knocks them off the vegan list. Skip the green beans too, since they’re cooked with ham, and the macaroni and cheese and funnel cake stix both carry dairy. Menus and fryer setups shift by location, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the staff before you order.
