Uru Swati: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Uru Swati is a North and South Indian restaurant on Devon Avenue that serves no meat or fish anywhere on the menu. It isn’t a vegan restaurant though. Dishes lean on paneer, yogurt, and ghee, so a lot of what’s on the table is vegetarian rather than vegan. If you’re vegan, you’ll need to ask before ordering, but if you’re vegetarian, the entire menu is open to you without a single substitution.

Devon Avenue is Chicago’s center of Indian and Pakistani food, and Uru Swati has been one of the anchors of that strip for years. It’s a small room, 14 tables, with a casual, family-oriented feel rather than a formal dining setup.

Start with the chaats. The Samosa Chaat, Kachori Chaat, and Papdi Chaat are all $5.45, each built on a fried base topped with chickpeas, potatoes, yogurt, sev, and chutneys. The Pani Puri, eight crispy puris served with potatoes, black chickpeas, tamarind chutney, and spiced water for dipping, is $5.95 and one of the better versions of the dish in the city. The Dahi Batata Puri, also $5.95, and the Dahi Vada, lentil fritters soaked in yogurt sauce for $4.95, both lean on dairy, so skip those if you’re avoiding it.

For a full meal, the South Indian dosas are made fresh, not pre-cooked and reheated, and the Masala Dosa and Mysore Masala Dosa are the two most ordered items on the menu. The Gujarati Thali is the move if you want a sampler of several dishes on one plate, and the kitchen also runs Jain food options, meaning dishes made without onion or garlic for guests who keep that diet. House-made naan and garlic bread round out the bread program.

Because the kitchen doesn’t cook meat or fish at all, there’s no cross-contact risk from animal protein for a vegetarian ordering here. The dishes with dairy are clearly the ones built around paneer, yogurt, or ghee, so it’s easy to steer around them by name if needed, though the restaurant doesn’t mark items as vegan on the menu itself.

Prices stay low. Most chaats run under $6, and the average main course lands around the same range as a fast-casual lunch elsewhere in the city, which makes this an easy spot to eat well without spending much. Service has been described as slow during busy stretches, so this isn’t the place for a rushed weekday lunch break. Come with time to sit and let the food arrive at its own pace.

Uru Swati is closed on Tuesdays and open the rest of the week, with slightly later hours on Friday and Saturday nights. No reservations appear to be required, but calling ahead is a reasonable move if you’re bringing a group, since the room is small and fills up during dinner hours on the weekend. It’s a solid pick for a vegetarian who wants real Indian cooking rather than a diet-adjusted version of it.

Parking on Devon Avenue is street parking, and it can take a lap or two to find a spot during peak dinner hours, especially on weekends when the whole strip gets busy. If you’re making a night of Devon Avenue, this is an easy stop to pair with a walk past the sweets shops and grocery stores that line the same blocks. The strip itself is worth the trip even before you factor in the food, since it’s one of the few places in the city where an entire avenue is built around South Asian cooking.
