DC Vegan: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

DC Vegan is a fully vegan restaurant, cheese shop, and catering company on P Street in Dupont Circle. The menu is built to make you forget the word “substitute.” This isn’t a salad-and-smoothie spot. It’s Italian-American comfort food done all-vegan: subs, cutlets, fried apps, a full bakery case. Nothing on the menu needs an asterisk.

Order the meatball sub. Regulars call it out by name, and it’s the dish that keeps the lunch line moving slowly. The fried mushroom “calamari” is the other one people drive across town for. It’s cut and battered to actually read as calamari, not a mushroom in a costume. Buffalo cauliflower and potato skins cover the bar-food side. And the Chesapeake fritter sandwich takes DC’s crab cake obsession and rebuilds it with hearts of palm and Old Bay. Sacrilege or genius, depending who you ask.

Past the hot menu sits a grab-and-go case: wraps, salads, pasta salad, quinoa bowls. Good for people who want lunch, not a production. There’s also a bakery counter running cannoli, Italian cookies, and cheesecake. It turns this into a dessert stop even for people who only came in for the sub.

The kitchen is 100 percent vegan, full stop. No shared fryer with anything that used to moo. No “can we hold the cheese” conversation with a server who has to go check. Every plate that comes out is vegan by default. That’s why a strict vegan can order anything on the board without the usual cross-examination.

It’s also, as the name half-promises, an actual cheese shop. Not a gimmick line, a real retail counter built into the same space. Eat lunch, then walk out with vegan cheese for the fridge at home. Reviewers point to the chick’n cutlet club and the artichoke bowl as standouts beyond the sub and the calamari. More than one has singled out the cheesecake specifically, which tells you the bakery case is doing real work.

It runs seven days. Monday through Thursday, 11am to 9pm. Friday and Saturday stretch to 10pm. Sunday closes back at 9pm. Weekend brunch runs 11am to 3pm both days. Order pickup and delivery online, book a table through Toast, or call for catering. Casual trays or full-service, either way, which matters if you’re the one vegan on the office party planning committee and tired of bringing your own container.

Dupont Circle isn’t short on lunch options. It’s short on places where a vegetarian and a vegan can sit at the same table and order off the same menu without anyone negotiating. DC Vegan removes the negotiation entirely. The business bills itself as cruelty-free and sustainable by design, not bolted on as an afterthought, and the menu backs that up.

Call ahead for the sub. It sells out.
