Chaska Indian Vegetarian Cuisine: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review
Chaska Indian Vegetarian Cuisine serves Indian food in Marietta, and nothing on the menu has meat or fish in it. That’s not a special diet section tucked in the back. That’s the whole restaurant. Order anything on the board. You’re covered, from the chaat to the curries to the tandoori station.
What’s vegetarian at Chaska
Every dish is vegetarian, full stop. That said, this isn’t a vegan kitchen by default. Ghee, paneer, and dahi (yogurt) show up across the menu. If you need strictly plant-based food, ask for the separate vegan menu rather than guessing at what’s safe. There’s a Jain menu too, for guests who skip onion and garlic along with meat. Between the three menus, most dietary requests get a real answer instead of a shrug.
What to order
Start with the chaat: pani puri, dahi puri, samosa chaat. Tangy, crunchy street food that a lot of Indian restaurants in the US skip, because it takes real effort to plate right before it goes soggy. Chaska doesn’t skip it. For a main, the masala dosa is the safe, excellent choice on a first visit. A crisp rice-and-lentil crepe wrapped around spiced potato, served with sambar and coconut chutney. Dal makhani (black lentils simmered slow in butter and cream) and butter paneer both lean rich. This kitchen doesn’t hold back on dairy. Want more chew? Soya chaap, a wheat-gluten preparation grilled and spiced like tandoori meat, does the job. So does the tandoori paneer tikka.
There’s also an Indo-Chinese section: hakka noodles, fried rice. Its own genre in Indian-American restaurants, worth trying if you haven’t had it. Rajasthani dal bati churma, a baked wheat-flour ball crumbled into ghee and jaggery and served with lentils, is a regional dish most Indian restaurants in this country don’t bother stocking. Chaska does. Want something closer to familiar fast food? There’s an alu tikki burger. Chole bhature, spiced chickpeas with fried bread, rounds out the list of dishes worth ordering twice.
Prices and hours
Lunch thalis start at $12.99. A full plate with several dishes and rice, for close to what an appetizer costs elsewhere. Chaska is closed Monday. The rest of the week runs a lunch and dinner split: 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., then back open 4:30 to 9 p.m. The dining room has real ambiance, reviewers say, not a strip-mall folding-table setup. It works for a sit-down dinner, not just takeout. Call ahead at (770) 971-7872 for a group.
Good to know
Because the whole kitchen is vegetarian, there’s no fryer or grill fighting for space with chicken or fish. No need to ask a server to double check with the cook. That’s worth something if you’ve eaten somewhere that “can make it vegetarian” and gotten a plate that tastes like an afterthought. This isn’t that. Every dish was built to be vegetarian from the start. It shows in how much variety they’ve packed in instead of a token salad and a side of rice.
First visit? Order the masala dosa. Bringing someone who’s never had Indian street food? Add the pani puri. And if you eat dairy, don’t skip the butter paneer. It’s the dish this style of restaurant lives or dies on. Chaska does it right.
