Vegan & Vine: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Vegan & Vine is a fully plant-based cafe, wine bar and market on the corner of 7th Street and Thunderbird in Phoenix, which means the whole menu is open to you, brunch included.

It’s family owned and sits in Moon Valley, on the north side of the city. Three businesses share one room. There’s a kitchen serving comfort food and shared plates, a wine bar pouring vegan wine and cocktails, and a small market selling those wines, cold-pressed juices and grab-and-go food. Nothing in any of the three uses an animal product, so the usual reading of ingredient lists doesn’t apply.

What to order at Vegan & Vine

Brunch runs Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and it’s the strongest part of the menu. Chicken Fried Steak ($15.60) is fried vegan steak under sausage gravy with breakfast potatoes. Chilaquiles ($14.56) pile house tortilla chips with fire-roasted salsa, black beans, pico de gallo, tofu scramble, avocado and crema. Biscuits and Gravy ($15.60) uses house-made biscuits and country gravy. Prefer sweet? French Toast and Beignets both run $12.48.

Lunch and dinner lean American. The Cheeseburger ($16.64) is a plant-based patty with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickle and house mayo, and it comes with fries or a side salad. Portobello Burger ($15.60) puts roasted red peppers and truffle aioli on multigrain bread. Buffalo Sandwich ($15.60) is a crispy tofu patty tossed in buffalo sauce with house ranch and pickles. Edamame Mac and Cheese ($12.48) shows up as both a share plate and a main, penne baked in house cheese sauce under bread crumbs.

Flatbreads are the thing to split. Margherita runs $18.72, Portobello $19.76, and the Supreme ($20.80) carries sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers and black olives. Add Buffalo Cauliflower ($15.60), a Hummus Trio ($14.56) of original, red pepper and cilantro jalapeno, or hand-cut Onion Rings ($10.40) with spicy mayo.

Good to know before you go

Cross-contact isn’t a concern, because there’s no meat or dairy in the building to cross-contaminate with. Kids eat cheaply, with nuggets, grilled cheese, quesadillas and pancakes all at $8.32. Coffee is a full program rather than an afterthought, running from a $3.12 drip to a $6.24 matcha latte. Seating works indoors or out, and the patio is shaded and open to dogs, which matters in a Phoenix summer.

The practical stuff

You’ll find Vegan & Vine at 502 E Thunderbird Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85022. Published hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the kitchen closing at 8:30 p.m. every day. Call (602) 296-7638. Most plates land between $12 and $21, which puts a two-person dinner with a glass of wine around $60. Call ahead on a Monday, since some listings show the restaurant closed that day.

What makes this one worth the drive north is that it covers a whole day. Coffee and a tofu scramble in the morning, a flatbread and a glass of wine at night, and a bottle from the market on the way out, none of it requiring a substitution.
