Loving Heart: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Loving Heart has been serving fully vegan food in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood since 2013. A mom-and-son team runs it. Roughly 80% of the ingredients are certified organic. Every dish on the menu is vegan by default. No need to ask the kitchen to swap anything, no dairy, no eggs, no honey anywhere on the line.

The menu covers soups, sandwiches, wraps, salads, bowls, and dessert. It leans toward hearty, filling plates rather than light cafe fare. The Green Deva Bowl is one of the most ordered dishes, a full bowl built for a real meal, not a side. The house curry is another anchor: organic sweet potato, carrot, onion, chickpeas, spinach, and red bell pepper in a yellow curry sauce over romaine, topped with cilantro. A genuinely full plate, not a token vegetable side.

The wrap section carries a Heaven Wrap and a Hearty Black Bean Wrap. The Sunny Roll shows up often in reviews too, one of the kitchen’s stronger handheld options. Missing the format of a fried chicken sandwich? The Sky Burger is the answer, a faux fried “chicken” sandwich built entirely from plant ingredients. It works for a skeptical omnivore as much as a longtime vegan. Smoothies round out the menu, mango and banana shake versions among them, for anyone who wants a drink alongside the meal.

Because the entire kitchen is vegan, there’s no cross-contact risk with animal products the way there would be at a restaurant that also serves meat or dairy. That’s a real advantage of a fully vegan operation. Nothing on the prep line has touched an animal product. Full stop. That matters if you’re cooking for someone with a dairy or egg allergy as much as someone who’s simply vegan.

Pricing runs modest, $10 to $20 per person. That puts it closer to a neighborhood lunch spot than a destination restaurant, even though the food gets treated like a destination by its regulars. Reviewers consistently call out the food quality. “Least pretentious vegan spot in the city” shows up often enough in write-ups to be a real pattern, not a one-off.

Hours run Monday through Friday, late morning into early evening. Saturday runs late morning to evening too. Closed Sundays. Worth building into weekend plans if you’re headed to Uptown specifically for this spot.

For a vegan visiting Chicago, or a vegetarian curious about going further, Loving Heart is a low-risk way to do it. Familiar comfort-food formats. A fully vegan kitchen. Prices that don’t punish you for trying something new.
