Toasted: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Toasted in Montrose is a full-service cafe. A vegetarian doesn’t have to settle for a side salad here. The kitchen marks its vegan dishes clearly on the menu, and there are enough of them to build a real meal: an Avocado Toast, a Vegan BLTA, a vegan Za’atar sandwich, and two vegan salads, the Strawberry and the Quinoa.

Brunch is where the vegetarian options are strongest. The Breakfast Caprese and the Goat Cheese & Fig sandwich are vegetarian, not vegan, thanks to the cheese. Both sit on a menu that otherwise runs to pastrami, ham, turkey, and tuna. Want vegan specifically? Order the BLTA. It swaps in plant-based bacon and still gets the toasted-bread crunch the restaurant is named for. The Za’atar and the Grilled Cheese round out the lineup for anyone who eats dairy.

For something lighter, try the Vegan Quinoa Salad or the Vegan Strawberry Salad. Both are labeled vegan on the menu itself, not just assumed. That labeling matters. This kitchen serves meat throughout the rest of its menu, and a Chicken Garden Salad and a Quinoa Salmon Salad sit right next to the vegan versions. Knowing which dish is which before you order saves a conversation with the server.

Dessert leans vegetarian-friendly too. Eight flavors deep, the Toast Towers are the restaurant’s signature format, and at least one, a Tahini, Dates & Dark Cacao combination, is marked vegan. Coffee drinks default to oat or almond milk at no extra charge. Small detail, useful one, if you’re ordering a latte alongside your sandwich.

One thing isn’t confirmed: the kitchen setup behind the counter. Nothing says whether the vegan sandwiches get toasted on separate equipment from the meat ones. If cross-contact is a hard line for you, ask when you order rather than assume either way.

Prices run $12 to $28 a plate. The average ticket lands in the high teens to high twenties. That’s normal sit-down cafe pricing for the area, not a budget stop but not a splurge either. Counter service runs until mid-afternoon on weekdays, then the space switches to table service for dinner on nights it stays open past four. Your visit’s pace depends on when you show up.

Coffee matters here independent of the food. Espresso comes from Stumptown’s Hairbender blend, a well-regarded roast among coffee-focused cafes. Pair that with the oat- and almond-milk-by-default policy, and a vegan latte isn’t an upcharge or an afterthought. It’s just how the drink gets made.

This spot works well for a mixed group. The omnivore gets a Monte Cristo, the vegetarian gets a Breakfast Caprese, and the vegan gets a BLTA. Everyone orders off the same one-page menu, and no one has to ask the kitchen to improvise something off-list.
