Great American Cookies: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Great American Cookies is an easy yes for vegetarians, since the entire menu is bakery food and there’s no meat to dodge anywhere in the store. Almost every cookie, cookie cake, and brownie on the board works, so the real question is which ones are also vegan. This is a bakery counter, not a kitchen with a fryer full of meat, so the main thing to watch for at the mall isn’t meat at all.

What to order at Great American Cookies

The Original Chocolate Chip Cookie, Snickerdoodle, Sugar, and Peanut Butter Supreme cookies are all vegetarian, and so are the Cookie Cakes in Original, Red Velvet, and Strawberry Crinkle, the M&M Double Doozie, and the Fudge, Cheesecake, and Red Velvet Brownies. For something closer to vegan, the Xtra Smooth and Vanilla icings are vegan at the ingredient level, and Marble Slab’s sorbet flavors at the combo stores that pair the two brands are vegan too.

What to watch out for

Every cookie, cookie cake, and brownie on the standard menu contains egg and milk, so none of them are vegan as baked. Marble Slab ice cream at combo stores has the same dairy issue. If you want a vegan treat here, the icing and sorbet are really the only confirmed options, so don’t assume a cookie recipe skips eggs just because it looks simple.
