Wetzel’s Pretzels: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Wetzel’s Pretzels is an easy stop if you skip meat. The core of the menu, the plain and sweet pretzels, the bite-size Bitz, the cheese-stuffed pretzel, most dips, and the full lemonade lineup, is vegetarian without any changes.

What to order at Wetzel’s Pretzels

The Original Pretzel is the simplest order, hand-rolled dough baked fresh and brushed with butter, paired with mustard or pizza sauce dip. The Sinful Cinnamon Pretzel and Wetzel Bitz or Cin-A-Bitz cover the sweet side. Ask for any pretzel without the butter brush and it becomes vegan, since the base dough is just flour, water, yeast, salt, and a baking-soda bath. Close with an Original Lemonade, a strawberry lemonade, or one of the frozen granitas, all vegan as poured.

What to watch out for

Skip the Pepperoni-Stuffed Pretzel and the Wetzel Dog, both built on meat, and check the Almond Crunch Pretzel, which lists a fish allergen. The Cheese-Stuffed Pretzel and the Cheese and Jalapeno Cheese Dips are vegetarian but not vegan, and Wetzel’s doesn’t publish whether its cheese dips use animal rennet, so ask if that matters to you. The Cream Cheese Dip and Caramel Dip both contain dairy too. Otherwise, the menu is short enough that building a vegetarian order takes about ten seconds at the counter.
