Tijuana Flats: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Tijuana Flats builds its menu around customizable bowls and burritos, so vegetarians and vegans can eat well without much extra effort. The chain says there are up to 45 vegetarian-friendly combinations on the current menu, and the beans, rice, and vegetables at the core of most dishes are vegan by default. There’s no formal vegetarian marking system, but the build-your-own format does most of that work for you.

What to order at Tijuana Flats

The Vegan Burrito, built from beans, rice, vegetables, and verde sauce, is the most direct order on the menu and needs no modification. A build-your-own bowl or bean tacos let you pick your own fillings, and the bean burrito, bean chimichanga, and bean enchiladas all work the same way once you skip the cheese and sour cream. For sides, chips and guacamole are vegan by default, and the black beans and cilantro lime rice make good additions to any bowl.

What to watch out for

Cheese and sour cream are the default add-ons on most of these dishes, so say “no cheese, no sour cream” if you want the vegan version rather than just the vegetarian one. Chips and queso is vegetarian but not vegan because of the dairy, and the Tijuana Trio only stays vegan if you skip the queso dip. The churro bites and dessert options all contain egg or dairy, so they’re vegetarian only.
