Boston Market: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Boston Market is a rotisserie-chicken chain, so there’s no vegetarian entree waiting for you on the menu. What you can do is build a full plate from the sides, which is a legitimate strategy here since there are more of them than at most chains.

What to order at Boston Market

Order two or three sides and you’ve got a meal. Mashed potatoes without gravy, macaroni and cheese, and creamed spinach are the heavy hitters, all vegetarian since they lean on dairy rather than meat. Sweet potato casserole, cornbread, and cilantro lime rice round things out. For anything closer to vegan, stick with cinnamon apples, a plain garden salad, or the seasonal cranberry walnut relish, all listed as vegan as served, plus fresh steamed vegetables if you ask for no butter.

What to watch out for

Hold the gravy on anything starchy, since both the poultry and beef gravies are meat-based. Garlic dill new potatoes and sweet corn look like plain vegetables, but both get tossed in a butter blend that contains whey, so they’re vegetarian, not vegan. Cornbread and mac and cheese both contain egg, which matters if you avoid it. And with the chain down to roughly two dozen locations or fewer nationwide after a wave of bankruptcies, call ahead or check the locator before you drive over, since most metro areas no longer have one.
