Sonic Drive-In: What’s Vegetarian Editorial Review

Sonic doesn’t have a dedicated vegetarian entree, since the whole menu is built around burgers and hot dogs. But if you eat dairy and egg, the fried sides, a grilled cheese, and the entire drinks lineup give you plenty to actually order.

What to order at Sonic Drive-In

Groovy Fries, Tater Tots, and seasonal Sweet Potato Tots are all vegetarian and vegan by recipe, though they share a fryer. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a real vegetarian meal if you eat dairy, just confirm the bun since Sonic sources bread locally and it can vary by store. For something plant-based, build your own sandwich with no meat or cheese on a vegan bun, loaded with vegetable toppings. Fritos corn chips and Tree Top Apple Sauce are simple vegan grab options too, and the Classic Breakfast Burrito works as a vegetarian pick once you drop the meat, since it still carries egg and cheese.

What to watch out for

Vegans have a much thinner list than vegetarians here. Mozzarella Sticks, Cheese Fries, and the Grilled Cheese all contain dairy, and Onion Rings and Pickle-O’s are disputed for milk content, so check the allergen guide if you’re strict. Shakes, Master Shakes, Blasts, and cream slushes are all off-limits for vegans thanks to dairy, though limeades, fruit slushes, and lemonade are safe. A Veggie Burger shows up at select locations but contains dairy, so it’s vegetarian only, not vegan, and availability isn’t guaranteed everywhere.
